What is a patient champion?

Perhaps you have experienced treatment or are going through treatment or maybe you are caring or have cared for a relative or friend. If so, we’d like to hear from you.

As a patient champion you can keep the local community up-to-date, and you can also bring your voice and opinions to the heart of the decision-making process.

Our patient champions come from diverse backgrounds and include a police inspector, a former actor, a teacher, a trainer, voluntary workers, an engineer, parents, stay-at-home partners and an academic.

They all share the determination and commitment to use their experiences to drive positive change. You can read some of their stories below.

How will you make a difference?

Our patient champions are passionate about their involvement and they’re already making a difference.

We understand that our patient champions bring different skills, as well as views and experiences, to the programme and your activity will reflect this.

What would you do?

As patient champions we’d like you to go out and tell others about the programme and encourage them to help shape cancer and end of life care in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

We understand that our patient champions bring different skills, as well as views and experiences, to the programme and your activity will reflect this.

Our patient champions have been interviewed on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC’s Politics Show. They have told their stories in film and print. They’ve given presentations to groups and meetings or taken questions from friends or relations, but many join simply to be part of the decision-making process or to share their knowledge within their communities.

There is no pressure on our patient champions to take part in specific activities. We’d simply like you to become involved and share your experiences to help shape future services around your needs.

Our patient champions meet monthly, and we want more people to get involved. To find out more or become a patient champion please contact Bikki Gray, 07808 201 586.

Our mission is to improve patients’ experience of cancer and end of life care services by coordinating each step of the patient journey.
